Ad Hominem Comment

Any one notice that an ad hominem argument often supports the conclusion of the argument before it, as well as ignore it.

"Your a terrible person"
Ad Hom. Response: "Well, your a terrible person too."

  1. I think you have more of a tu quoque here. Tu quoque is the "you too" argument against the person. The ad hominem abusive and circumstantial focus more on the second person responding to the first by either verbally abusing them or alluding to circumstances that affect the opponent. Does this make sense?

  2. I don't have my book in front of me but I'm pretty sure that the Tu quoque is a section of the ad hominem fallacy so I think that part is alright. But I did notice that about these Brian, the response admits to their own fault while pointing it back at someone else. It would seem a bit smarter to at least try to divert the accusation from yourself, but I do this all the time so I guess I can't really say too much haha

  3. Nicely observed. Such a defense often admits, at least tacitly, to the original accusation. I suppose the second person is reacting rather than thinking clearly.
